A multi-site digital thermometer with a color-coded display
The Vicks SpeedRead is a digital thermometer for oral, underarm or rectal readings. The display lights green, yellow or red to show how the reading compares to the manufacturer's fever ranges.
The manual says the peak reading is usually reached in about 9 to 11 seconds, followed by 5 beeps. It reads 89.6 to 109.2 F with a lab accuracy of +/- 0.2 F from 96.0 to 107.0 F.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I take an oral, underarm or rectal reading?
Oral: place the tip well under the tongue with the mouth closed. Underarm: for babies and young children, and reads about 1 degree lower than oral. Rectal: insert no more than 1/2 inch, stop at any resistance, and reads about 1 degree higher than oral. The peak is usually reached in 9 seconds (oral), 11 seconds (underarm) or 10 seconds (rectal), then 5 beeps sound.
What do the colors mean?
Green is 97.0 to 98.9 F (acceptable), yellow is 99.0 to 100.9 F (elevated), and red is 101 F and above (possible high fever).
Do I need a probe cover?
The manual says disposable probe covers are provided with the thermometer. It suggests one for oral use and requires one for rectal use. Extra covers are sold at drugstores and pharmacies.
How should I prepare?
Avoid eating, drinking, exercising, showering, bathing or smoking for 15 minutes before an oral reading. Remove the protective label on the display before first use.
What is the temperature range and accuracy?
It reads 89.6 to 109.2 F and shows Lo or Hi outside that range. Laboratory accuracy is +/- 0.2 F between 96.0 and 107.0 F.
How do I clean it?
Wash the probe tip with soap and warm water, or disinfect it with 70% isopropyl alcohol, then wipe dry. Do not boil it or put it in a dishwasher, and do not use thinner or solvents.
When should I call a doctor?
The manual says a high, prolonged fever needs medical attention, especially in young children. Do not let children take their own temperature unattended, and keep batteries away from children and pets.
