Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener VS100 handheld pediatric vision screening device
The Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener VS100 is a handheld vision screener that checks both eyes at once. It estimates refractive error, pupil size and eye gaze, and is intended for subjects six months of age through adults.
Held about 1 meter from the subject, it uses lights and sound to draw a child's attention, so no verbal answers are needed. The touchscreen shows whether a complete eye exam is recommended, and reports can be printed wirelessly or exported by USB or wireless.
It is for use by or under the direction of a healthcare professional, and it does not replace a full eye exam. Screening needs a pupil size of at least 4 mm, so dim room lighting works best. The device is not waterproof.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Who can be screened?
Welch Allyn states the Spot Vision Screener is intended for subjects six months of age through adults.
What does it check?
It estimates refractive error from light reflexes in each eye, and also estimates pupil size, pupil distance and eye gaze. Welch Allyn says it detects six amblyopic risk factors in children as young as six months.
Does it replace an eye exam?
No. Welch Allyn states screening is not intended to replace a full eye examination, and false positive and false negative results may occur. Results may not be used directly to prescribe corrective eyewear.
Who should use it?
It is indicated for use by healthcare professionals or under the direction of a healthcare professional.
How far away do I hold it?
About 1 meter (36 inches) from the subject, until both eyes are clear on the screen. A fixation target with lights and sound helps hold a child's attention.
Does lighting matter?
Yes. A minimum pupil size of 4 mm is needed for screening, and 5 mm or greater is best. If pupils are too small, the screen asks you to adjust the room lighting.
How do I get results out?
You can print summary reports wirelessly, and import or export subject data with a wireless connection or a USB drive.
Is it waterproof?
No. Wipe off minor droplets with a soft dry cloth and keep it away from heat and direct sunlight.
