Frequently asked questions

How do I take a temperature?

Press Measure to power on and wait for the beep. Hold the thermometer 4 to 6 cm from the center of the forehead, aimed between the eyebrows. Press Measure again and slowly move the device toward or away from the forehead. The arrow flashes until the correct distance is reached, then the LED bar lights, three beeps sound and the reading shows.

Who is it for?

Welch Allyn describes it as a clinical-grade device for intermittent body temperature measurement in patients of all ages in a professional-use environment. The manual states that US federal law restricts the device to sale to, or on the order of, a licensed healthcare practitioner.

What can throw off a reading?

Distance outside 4 to 6 cm, movement, hair, sweat or dirt on the forehead, and a dirty or touched sensor lens. Wait 10 minutes after cleaning the forehead. Let the patient and thermometer sit in the same room for 30 minutes, and avoid measuring for 30 minutes after activity, bathing, eating, drinking or being outdoors. Wait at least 1 minute between readings.

What temperature range does it read?

It displays 93.2 to 109.4 F (34 to 43 C). It works in rooms from 60.8 to 104 F (16 to 40 C). Readings outside the range show an error.

Can I switch between F and C?

Yes. Press C/F to see the reading in the other scale. Hold the MEM and C/F buttons together for 3 seconds to change the default.

How do I clean it?

Wipe the sensor lens gently side to side with a cotton swab or cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. Do not submerge it, do not autoclave it, and do not use abrasive cleaners. It is not waterproof.

What if a reading looks wrong?

The manual says to check the patient's temperature with an alternate method and verify the thermometer is working.
